“There is that wonderful moment when Picasso describes to Andre Malraux how he felt in the basement of the Trocadéro. He walked in–and you know it was an awful musty room–there was a bad smell there, almost as if some bird had died, and he talks about how terrified he was because suddenly he realizes what (African) masks are all about. He used the word intercesseur. He said they’re intercesseur, they’re mediators. They come between us and evil spirits. He said that’s what I’ve been doing all my life. He said his paintings were totemistic, to hold off catastrophe, to hold off disaster.”

- Norman Mailer, interview with Michael Silverblatt. June 20, 1996.
